The Doctor Scared Me

I took Henry and Brooklyn for regular checkups and shots today. I went in thinking the worst thing that would happen would be crabby babies from the shots. Oh No, of course not. The doctor says that because the percentile of Henry's head growth has jumped so rapidly and because his soft spot isn't closed, he has to have a CT scan for macrocephaly. He has to be sedated. This worries me more than a little. More than likely he's fine, but I looked macrocephaly up and it is some scary stuff.

***"Macrocephaly may be due to megalencephaly (enlarged brain), hydrocephalus (water on the brain), cranial hyperostosis (bone overgrowth), and other conditions. It is called "syndromic" when it is associated with any other noteworthy condition, and "non-syndromic" otherwise. It can be caused by genetic conditions or by environmental events.[1]

Many genetic conditions are associated with macrocephaly, including familial macrocephaly, autism, PTEN mutations such as Cowden disease, neurofibromatosis type 1, and tuberous sclerosis; overgrowth syndromes such as Sotos syndrome (cerebral gigantism), Weaver syndrome, Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (Bulldog syndrome), and macrocephaly capillary malformation (M-CMTC) syndrome; neuro-cardio-facial-cutaneous syndromes such as Noonan syndrome, Costello syndrome, and cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome; Fragile X syndrome; leukodystrophies (brain white matter degeneration) such as Alexander disease, Canavan disease, and megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts; and glutaric aciduria type 1 and D-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria.[1]"

Anyway, he is developing normally, but the doctor obviously thought there was some cause for concern because it always takes forever to get appts with the hospital we use, and they had my son's appt within 5 min. I am trying to stay calm and think everything's alright (which it probably is), but I am a worrier by nature.

On a lighter note, Mykaela has her 2nd softball practice tonight. I think she is really getting into sports, which, is a good thing because she really needs interests of her own. She also definitely needs to learn that physical activity is important to be healthy, but it can also be fun!

OK, hope everyone has a nice Tuesday. It is sunny and 66 here today, so I am hoping to get everyone outside.

I agree with you that physical activity is important. I should start trying to get fit as a matter of fact.

I could see why you'd be worried! It sounds like more of precautionary measure than anything else. I do hope the procedure goes well and that the results are nothing to be concerned about.
